Yes Darley - Maryborough (QLD) is a bit closer than WA. Seeing how I'm new to all this 'forum stuff' - I'll send you a 'Private Message'... I don't want to appear as though I'm hijacking this thread anymore than I already have... i guess I'll find out whether this PM stuff will work...

Cliff thanks for your both reply unfortunatly will not be able to come to Prosperpine because of my work, so if the Gidgee come in log form and if I read bettween your words, look like the log is not very wide 80 .. 100m/m in diameter? Gidgee boring? well look like you turn a bit of it to say that would say the same for mango and banksia wood, BTW the link you post deosn't work for me look that my computer got is tendrum too

The logs can be up to about 10" across.

I don't mean Gidgee in general is boring, I mean the stuff from out there is boring.

The grain in Mango & Banksai is much easier to see.

The Heartwood of the stuff from Longreach is almost black so you can't see the grain, just the splits, cracks & any scratches.

I had some Pink/Purple Ringed Gidgee branches given to me & they were beautiful. They were only about 3" diam so I made candle holders out of them.

I'm going to chase down where the Pink/Purple Ringed Gidgee branches came from & see if I can get some more.

Dave Dresher at SE woodturning supplies at Yatala has some...
i got some last yera from trend, expensive but good..
i have a few small logs but they r mine !!!....

Thanks Cliff the link work now and is very nice to see what you will up to, sorry I can't make, I would like too, in mean time if you can source out your Gidgee supplier I would apreciated, I can buy or trade if you want but would discused this off forum, I prefer. BTW I think Cj is a member of the IAP too as Cjaussiepens.

For a piece 60cm x 5cm x 1m the cost would be $10 plus GST & postage.

We don't have Gidgee but have Mulga & Black Mulga which are as good or better than Gidgee.

Do a search for ' MOCKMICKEY ' wood supplies , last time I looked they had a bucket load gidgee ,ringed gidgee , pink/purple & a swag of western hardwoods .I am at work at the moment so can't search to see if the site is still up..

About 2 years ago I stood in a stand of gidgee trees , just down over the QLD border around Hungerford way. There were about 20 odd trees in all & all dead whilst all the Mulga trees around were thriving .6 hours and 2 chainsaws later I ended up with a swag of real nice firewood or had I been interested enough pen blanks to last 10 men 2 lifetimes .I did however get some nice Mulga .
I got given a gidgee fence post by the cocky which was put in by his father approx 50 years ago .It was about 8 inches in diameter and 4 1/2 ft long and took 2 blokes and a blue heeler to lift it , after trimming it down , I got some real nice timber .

Thanks veebull I may make a trip down to Hungerford but the problem is I got only 1 chain saw, do the farmer let you cut down they trees ? or you cut only the one on the ground ?

Geee veebull just look at the map this is an EXPEDITION TO THE BUSH :eek: from Hervey Bay would take me 2 days each way trip, better to hire a truck , to make it worthwhile

all the gidgee I saw which was in a fairly isolated area , was dead but still standing .All I had to do was literally push the trees over , absolutely no moisture to hold them in the ground .If you are looking to make a trip , head down to Wanaaring .Head down through Hungerford gate about 2 hours and chuck a right ! Still a bit of gidgee to be found and lots of Mulga .
