Use of Golden cypress in joinery exposed to sun
Gidday Forum,
I'm new to this group and am looking for advice on the use of Golden cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) for door and window joinery in a position where they will get a lot of direct northern sun, although mainly in winter, being largely shaded by eaves in summer. Is it a suitable timber, or will it split or warp? It can be sourced fully seasoned, the supplier says, so will that be adequate? Is there a simple way to protect this timber from the effects of direct sun without actually painting it? We have used this cypress for the internal cathedral ceiling framework and it looks great, although erected green it has split a little in places. My builder wants to use western red cedar for the doors and windows, but I'd like to use something else for a change. Using the cypress for doors and window frames would tie the room timbers together well I think.
Any comments and experience on exposing Golden cypress to direct sun?
Many thanks
Peter Martin
