Got some green wood, what do I do now?
Following from my last thread, https://www.woodworkforums.com/f14/bu...elaide-163184/ , I happened to go by a school oval yesterday where they were cutting down a gumtree. I stopped and asked if I could have some of the wood. At first I was told that all the wood was allocated by the school, but when I said I wanted it for turning the guy said he would give me a piece.(Nice Guy ) He gave me a piece that is 140mm diameter by 300mm long. Looks like it may of been a part of a fork from the main trunk.
Ok, now what do I do?
I know I should seal the ends, but what would be best? Water based house paint, candle wax, something else? I already have the paint.
I'm not sure if I can make a bowl as it is too small a diameter, maybe a box. I gather it will stay green for a long time so what ever I turn will need to be left to dry before finishing. I doubt I'll be using this wood before the new year, as I'll have other things to do.
Thanks

If you can, the best way is to turn it green oversized, then coat end grain with melted wax and leave to dry. After drying re-turn to finished size.
If you don't want to turn now, cut down to sized needed, then seal ends and dry. It takes a while, so seal with best product you have. Keep watch though and seal any cracks that may appear with thin CA as soon as they appear.
Some timbers, especially the eucalypts, just want to crack. If left solid, you may end up with just pen blanks.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new
