    Default How is the safety factor of timber derived

    Hi all im new to this board. Im a student seeking some advice in regards to a report im doing on timber for school.

    The question ive got stuck on is, How is the safety factor of timber derived ?

    can anyone shine some light my way ... would be much appreciated.

    If you mean Stress Gradings they are determined by
    Bending,
    Tension parallel to grain
    Shear in beam
    Compression parallel to grain
    Characteristic short duration average modulus of elasticity parallel to grain
    Characteristic short duration average modulus of rigidity

    Safety factor is mostly an uncertainty factor. Uncertainty arises from real loads vs. design loads, variation in material properties, construction errors, and even methods of design analysis - which are usually only a convenient fiction to simulate real conditions.
