    Default H3 H4 Treated pine

I am going to build myself a picnic table from treated pine and I had planned on using the H4 grade stuff I'd read about for the legs to stop them from rotting. The bloke at the timber yard said the H3 stuff would do because its all going to rot in 20 years anyway.

    What do you think?

That sounds more like what I thought was the case. Now I just have to find some nice straight stuff somewhere in Melbourne.

If you interested in the eco-friendly stuff try these guys. I bought several 75mm sleepers from them and they were all straight as a die. Very happy.

There is also an end seal you can buy to paint on cut ends.
The level of treatment only goes so far into the timber from the surface.

Most preservative treatmens for softwoods are full penetration treatments, hardwoods are a different prospect and only have what's called an 'envelope' of treatment as the treament doesn't penetrate the heartwood.

That's what I was beginning to believe but I was looking at some stuff yesterday and the bloke told me that I would need to buy some of their Enseal or Ecoseal to seal all the cut ends. I'm trying to work out if that is the case or if the bloke doesn't know what he is talking about.

Having just used some and made several cuts it doesn't seem like full penetration treatment. It is clear that the treatement only makes it about 5-10mm into the wood in parts. I would use the sealer on cuts to be sure.

i have made over 10 000 cuts in treated pine and am yet to find one without full penetration.

treated hardwood only penetrates 5-10mm if ya lucky and even end sealing teh cuts dosent stop it rotting. never ever use treated hardwood!

Do you have a good source for treated pine? My experience is the opposite. I can only presume I am using inferior product. I am mainly talking about 75mm sleepers BTW.

Don't want to hijack this thread, but a suplementary question. Will treated timber prevent termites/white ants from reaching "good food". That is, will they cross it.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

the answer to your question bob is no. the termites will eat treated pine, i have seen this first hand. i have replaced hundreds of joists and bearers over the years. unless the timber is treated for termites, they will happily eat anything. nasty little buggers, but they do keep me busy!
