Hacking up Larry's damage
G'day.
I took a few photos of what I've been up to on the weekend.
I've been picking the good bits out of some logs that Larry threw around.
Mainly Silky Oak & Sarsaparilla but there is something else very pale but very interesting that I haven't identified yet.
I've been making turning blanks out of most of it.
The pile on the right is just firewood. (Not counting the mango log)
The old chainsaw is sitting on a solid silky oak chopping block.
Photos are of
1. the wood heap on the veranda of the shed.
2. a split piece of Sarsaparilla.
3. & 4. the butt pieces of the Silky Oak that landed on my shed.
Note the 6" jointer beside the smaller one for scale.Cliff.

The pile on the right is just firewood!
Cliff, what on earth are you going to do with firewood in Cairns?

We have a house on the tablelands too, just south of Malanda, currently 12° & windy & trying to rain outside.
We had 3 or 4 10° nights & a 9° over the last couple of weeks.
We are 865M above sea level, just below the clouds most of the time.
800M above sea level is where 'upland cloud forests' start.Cliff.

I feel very lucky to have have had two visits to Cairns over the years, both at this time of year including time spent on the tablelands - don't remember those kind of conditions. Maybe global warming isn't all that it is cracked up to be.
By the way, conditions in Orange at 9pm were 0.7deg (feels like -1.7deg). Want to swap?

Jeez Cliff, that's a very innovative method of drying your timber. I didn't know that you were so keen on ebonizing.
The sarsaparilla looks interesting. Post some piccies when you get around to turning it.
At least your chainsaw runs. I spent half the day trying to get my brothers chainsaw going in order to cut up some chinese elm & failed miserably! The carby is just about to fall off - broken mounting screws. Aaarrrrgggh!!!
Oh well.
Regards,
Barry.

Yeah, that old dear is 43 years old.... doesn't like starting when cold but a quick shot of aerostart sure helps its attitude.

That's a pity - couldn't some usable timber been extracted? Granted, I'm a bit strapped for choice, so anything that doesn't look like pine looks great.
That Sarsaparilla looks like it'd have made an interesting box."Clear, Ease Springs"

The Sarsaparilla is interesting, I have turned a couple of bowls out of it before.
The piece I used didn't have the intense colour that this log has.
The good thing is that this is only a branch off a VERY big tree that is still standing.
It has plenty more good big branches with busted up ends that may need to be pruned.Cliff.
