Default Hard maple supplier for wide boards Melbourne?

Anyone have a supplier in Melbourne for wide maple boards? I am looking for 10" wide by 1" thick for a tool cabinet. I have tried most of my usual haunts with limited success. American hardwoods do have what I'm after but only 1.5" thick. I don't have the capability to dimension 10" wide boards any thinner other than planing, so would be a bit of a waste of timber and $$. I can laminate but would prefer to exhaust options before I do that.

    TIA.

Maybe ask if they can re-saw the boards or know someone that can. No doubt there are board members in Melbourne that might be able to do that for you. If you were in Brisbane I could have done it.

    Thanks Mark,

They probably can resaw it for me, to confess, I didn’t even ask. But it becomes 1/2” thick minus the cut which is probably not much use for me or them. I was just trying to avoid paying for the wastage that’s all.

Have you tried Brittons timber and Matthews timber? If you could use some of the newer Australian modified timbers, such as Spotted Gum, you might have better luck.

    Regards,

    Hi Lee Roy,

I'm not a commercial supplier, just reducing my wood diverse stocks. I found one board of US maple that may be OK, or it may be too narrow.
Its 5 x 3/4 x 84". Obviously ex a 1" board and planed on BOTH sides (not by me). A bit dirty from mud at one end.
I may have more but will need to look. I'm not in Melb but Warragul (120 km SE)

umm 1.5" resawn would (I hope) not be 1/2" . I am ignorant on this issue (and lots of others) but how thick is a resaw blade? surely not 1/2"

I was looking for wide maple boards last year. Managed to get up to 330mm wide boards from Britton timbers. Earlier this year I found a 270mm board at Matthews too. Wide boards are harder to get but there are always a few in a pack. Just call around mate.

I think he means taking a 1" board out leaves 1/2" less kerf, so probably 3/8 or even 1/4, so of little actual value.

    Hey Lee Roy,

How did you end up going in the end there mate? I'd super keen to hear about the Tool Cabinet build. I'm also curious why someone hasn't started a dedicated area on this forum to Tool Chests and Tool Cabinets, just like the workbench section. They are such a wonderful piece of kit that are equally as important as workbenches, yet much more diverse and bespoke to the person who builds them!

    Cheers,
    Siggy

    Hi Siggy,

I ended up getting what I wanted from Anthony (timberlord) in Footscray. Got both maple and cherry for the front doors in the dimensions I was after.

I intended to build the cabinet that Mark Pekovitch has on FWW. A Cabinet for Hand Tools - FineWoodworking

My dovetails weren’t good enough IMO for display as yet so I have been getting them to a better look between now and writing this thread. I’ve also not used a Japanese saw before so using that as an excuse. Sadly I’m packing up the house to move at the minute so I think the cabinet is still a few months away.

    Hey Lee Roy,

Anthony is the best. I wasnt sure what to expect when i first got timber from him....this white landcruiser ute rocked up and this silver haired guy who looked like a surfer lept out of his chariot like a saviour to those in need of maple. He has always been first class in service.

Oh nice! A very nice sounding design indeed! Dont worry about the dovetails, as thats what hand cut is - never perfect...otherwise youd buy a router jig. It's all part of the character of your work and thats what sets it apart from 90% of those Domino-ed/machine jointed tool cabinets. Oh mate, Jap saws are good for some and not so good for others, its simply a matter of preference! Holden vs Ford......(or should I say GM vs Ford as it is now).

You should still totally post a few pics! Be proud! 😀

    Have a great weekend mate!
