Thread: Hardest Timber in Tasmania

Hi Reeves,well i dont know about density's but the blue gum when dry is really hard,i wouldn't put it through my machines for the fear of dulling the blades,we have to drill before nailing every time.
Horizontal scrub is on a par with celery top pine as a guess for density i recon,i have walked some coupes and stepping on the dry h/s it snaps fairly easy but finding larger logs is almost impossibe,i have never put it through a machine to really see what it is like s i must try it some time even just for my own interest.......

ok thanks JIm and Kiwi for the responses, looks like the BG Globulous is close to the hardest, it says 900 in most documentation...pretty dense stuff. I have read there is grey iron bark down and that could possibly be harder i guess its up to 1100 in the docs.


Now what do yas think is the darkest wood down there, whats almost black ?

I know its not blackwood, i guess Blackheart Sassafras is very dark in parts but not over the whole log.....
