Hardwood for BBQ area
Hello to you all, I am about to build an outdoor BBQ area and I want to use 150mm * 150mm hardwood posts, 8 foot long, but want to ask you experts what hardwood do I use that wont split bow or twist.
The slab size is 6.5m by 11m with five posts either side with a gable roof. A year ago I built a post and rail fence in front of my property using 150*150mm hardwood posts and must admit they did'ent bow or twist but quite a few did split and I don't want that
to happen in the BBQ area.
I would be greatful for any help in this matter.
Regards Sean.

Hi Sean,
Red box is very good, but a bit hard to get.
Furniture grade red gum is not to bad. What ever you use it will help to end seal and oil to
reduce any cracking.
I'm not sure what timbers are in your area, there may be something else that would be stable.

Hi Sean
I used furniture grade 125 x125 red gum posts around the verandahs of my entire house, dressed all round and oiled. They were spectacular. I milled them 8 years ago, so they were perfectly stable. Yes, it was a bit lavish using first grade dining table leg stock for posts but it became a great feature of the house. I still have some of these as well as some 150 x 150 from the same batch if you are interested.
Cheers
James
