Greetings all, I must firstly apologize for this thread because its not technically about real wood. Some years ago I made Foundry Pattern out of some stuff called High Density Fiberboard. I was told that it was three times more material than MDF for the same given thickness. It was certainly a lot heavier and it was carcinogenic because of the binding in the material. It was sold for use in Wet Areas. I purchases it in a raw ie no paint state and it was dark brown. It was ideal for patterns, it glued well, sanded exellently, tapped like mild steel and did not need painting. The patterns I made out of it are still as good as when I made them. It came in three thicknesses 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" thick and the sheets were about 12 Ft long. But the up shot of it is I can not find any of it now. I have to make some foundry patterns and this would make life easier. Otherwise its back to Jelutong and its problems. So if anyone out there can help it would be much appreciated.

I remember Laminex Industries were the manufacturers of the stuff. They even claimed it was almost bullet proof. I haven't seen it for years (but also have never had a call for it either) so whether or not its still made only a call to your nearest Laminex outlet will tell you.
Brickys used for mortar boards because it was tough and waterproof/resistant
    Kind regards Rod

Have a look at Weathertex, an oil-temperd hardboard.

Well chaps thanks for the info. Laminex do not make HDF any more. Damn Damn. It was almopst bullet proof. I will go back to Jelutong. Its a Malaysian rain forest timber. The big disadvantage is that it comes in rough sawn planks and can be a bit wonky. Australian Furnitur Timber in Plummer St Port Melbourne stock it but they are closed untill next Wedensday. I will let you know what eventuates. Thanks again 4-6-4

Laminex HD3 is/was a melamine covered HDF for wet areas, not sure if it's still made.

Sorry to drag up an old thread.... but I've just registered to ask if anybody has any sources of HDF ... seems to be completely off the menu in Australia (

... or ideas about similar products ? Some type of engineered wood product, but denser/stiffer than MDF. No other special requirements (it won't be used in a harsh environment)

Jelutong is also available from Mathews timber, they are in Rooks Rd, Nunawading and as far as I am aware they are open for trading. Hope this helps

    Question

Hi all. I must have missed the above reply.

I'm a bit confused about jelutong. My research tells me it's light weight/desnsity, around 500kg/m3.

I'm looking for a high density engineered product ... denser than MDF (so >800 kg/m3) ... so something like "HDF", "laminex HD3", "masonite" .... or .... suggestions?

Specifically I'm looking for something quite (relatively) thick, say 3/4"-ish.

I want to use it for making speaker cabinets.
