    Should I use flashing on the joists, or will painting the joists suffice?
    Or paint and flashing?

    I tend to simply paint the top. I use whatever exterior paint I happen to have lying around, or go and get a mistint from bunnings.

    If you are screwing straight to the slab, you should probably paint the bottom too.
