Need help to identify this timber please.
Hi All
I'm new to this site. I have a large heavy piece of furniture that I would like to sell and I don't know what sort of timber it is to advertise it but it's heavy as lead.
Can anyone help me with what it might be?
I'm attaching some photos and I hope they are good enough.

I think your post breaks just about every rule in the book Miss Tess.
Anyways, looks like some sort of pine. Baltic Pine maybe?-Scott

Thanks. I would have though so too except for the weight.
The removal guys said it was nearly as heavy as my pianola and that's a lot! Took two of them everything they had to move it with straps etc. Do you think it could be pine and still be so heavy? It is a big cabinet though.
thanks

Hmm, pine shouldn't be that heavy.

Tess, identifying wood with any certainty from pictures like these is damn near impossible. There are so many different woods, and so many look superficiaally the same - this is why woods from different parts of the world are given the same common name, even though they are completely different species.
However, I will stick my neck out on this & say that the pics are good enough to show it certainly ain't pine, or any related species of softwood. It's a hardwood of some sort, I will bet good money on! If it was made in Australia, I would think possibly Qld Maple, but could be Tassie oak or one of several other species. Given your emphasis on heavy, Tassie oak is a distinct possibility.....
Cheers,IW

It's pine and it's heavy because there's a lot of it.

Thanks Ian. It certainly looks like a hardwood to me but of course if I was any expert I would'nt be asking you guys. At least I can do some further research now with your suggestions. thanks.

Tess, one thing that often helps is to find out where it was made, if you can. Sometimes there is a label or stamp on the back or in some other unobtrusive area - that could be a huge help - you may then be able to dig up an old catalogue or something online or at a library, that tells you all you need to know. If it was made in Aus., chances are high that it is an Australian wood (though it doesn't rule out foreign wood - lots & lots has been imported over the years). If it was made elsewhere & brought here, then things get trickier...
Good luck,IW
