Need Help in Identifying Timber
Hey Everyone,
I recently acquired a lot of beautiful timber that I would like to sell but don't know what it is.
I remember my uncle telling me that the photo's labelled "board1" and "board2" were Mahogany but I have no idea what type.
The boards range in width from 300mm to a massive 570mm wide and from 3.5m to 5.5m long. All are rough sawn and about 26mm thick.
I have never seen timber so wide, long and straight. I have belt sanded the end of 2 boards and wet them to try and show the grain and colour.
The photo labelled "board3" I believe is Blackwood.
I have multiple pieces of up to 390mm wide and 2.7m long
If anyone here could help me with a wholesale or retail cubic rate I would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The first three photos are really too rough (for me at least) to identify though others may be able to. It looks a bit like Miva Mahogany but you haven't planed it enough to be sure. Does the timber have a smell? Is it hard or soft? Is it heavy or light? You may really need someone local to you to have a look at the wood rather than photos. The board that you think is Blackwood - does look like it. I don't know for sure the last one from a photo but it may also be Blackwood.
In terms of price - well, most wood on this forum is a "woodies price" rather than a commercial price. Woodies priced wood sells fast - the other doesn't. Big planks are hard to get, but also have less uses for hobbyists and are difficult to freight and carry. I am not at all knowledgeable about full commercial prices but I have read that the sort of numbers thrown around are $3000 to $4000 per cubic metre for some cabinet timbers. Woodies rates are often less than, to about half of, commercial rates in my experience. The last big planks of (a very rare) Aust timber that I bought through the forum were under half those commercial rates.
It really depends on what it cost you and whether you can afford to store it while you wait for a buyer. If you have a lot of it why don't you list some here at a reasonable rate - and see if you are rushed off your feet. Then you can decide if you need to drop the price, or that is enough of a return or to try your luck for more? I get the feeling that forumites like a bargain and dont reward greedy!
Depending on actual lengths, price and freight to Queensland I could be interested in some planks.
Good luck with it.

Thanks for your help. I'll try and plane some up this weekend and answer the extra questions.
I can't even guess what freight would cost to Queensland. Not cheap I'm sure.
