    Default Is this hoop pine

    Hi All,

This was an old door my uncle gave me. I put it through the thicknesser and the TS. He told me it was Hoop pine but it looks a bit to dark. I was going to use it for timber boat frames but i think it looks to nice to be hidden and painted again. Might make some nice photo frames with it.

    What do you think.

    Cheers

    Michael.

Because of the grain on the second board from the left I'd say more likely old growth kauri. The colour and texture doesn't seem right for hoop.
Have a nice day - Cheers

I tried posting last night, but the computer's playing tricks. I was saying that I reckon it is Hoop, and the colour would indicate old growth timber! We're on the same wave length Rowan!! At first I thought Kauri too, but I can't see any of that telltale flecking across the grain direction. Whatever it is.... lovely looking stuff, just love that rich honey colour.

    Cheers,

Change is inevitable, growth is optional.

FWIW I would use it for boat frames - if you do a good job on the 'pox and glass, it goes clear and you can varnish over the top and have the best of both worlds.

Its hard to tell alright. I've always called it hoop. But I don't really know.

But I agree with Andy, the old stuff is beautiful .Gives pine a good name for a change.

I've got a few old lining boards from old houses, that I strip of paint just for the old pine. Bit of effort, but the old stuff looks lovely.
