Thread: Where can I get Hoop Pine?

The inwhale spacer curves are easy. I made a simple jig and cut the spacers with a drill (about 30mm forstner from memory). Somewhere on the Eureka thread I have a picture of the jig, I'll try to find it and pop it up again on that thread.
Yes the spreader is laminated from a few scraps of oregon and the thinner bits are offcuts of Surian Cedar.
The angle of your scarf looks fairly steep (or is it just the angle of the photo that gives that impression?). What gradient have you used? I think Mik suggested to me either 6:1 or 8:1.
The angle is completely wrong! I had a not unusual brain fade, and have been chastised by Mik on another thread too! I made a bit of an error building the jig, and didn't notice till I had the original scarves for the PDRacer masts cut... all better now, and the Eureka gunwhale is not heavily stressed so it will be OK (Mik says so too ) , but please use 1:6 or more!
Cheers,
P

The other thing, Walesey, is to make sure that your scarfs are staggered. So you want a piece 5.1m long and you can get 4m lengths - make the scarf at 4m adding the extra 1.1m and put the scarf for the inwhale at the bow and the one for the gunwhale at the stern (or vice versa).
If there is ply sandwiched in between teh inwhale and the gunwhale (as it looks like the case for both Midge's and Ramps' canoes) and its all glued up with 'poxy and covered in glass and 'poxy, you don't need dowels. Indeed to put dowels or some other key in may make the thing a weaker joint by adding hard and soft points in what would otherwise be a fully supported gentle strength curve.
Don't make it more complex than it needs to be.....
My 2c FWIW
