Default Where find hoop pine in FNQ?

    Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I am situated in Mareeba west of Cairns. Despite being surrounded by forests and hoop pine plantations it is not easy getting hold of any. I am trying to find a supply of 1/4 sawn hoop pine, qld maple or oregon/douglas fir. It needs to be aircraft quality because thats what I am attempting to build. Any help greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Damian

Can't help with timber sorry Damien.
But building something that can fly sounds interesting.

Hi Dabbler, I have plans for a Z21 Staaken Flitzer, several have been built around the world, a very pretty little wooden biplane. Hope someone here knows where I can get some 1/4 sawn hoop pine

Fly, try Wren Timbers in Cairns, or track down Brian Pember down on the Kennedy Hwy, he is a small miller and may be able to help you, also contact the local woodturners in Mareeba, they will have a lot of contacts.

    Default Hoop pine

    Damian,

Can't help with Hoop Pine but I sold some Paulownia to a guy in Cairns who was building a real aircraft. He had apparently researched Paulownia and felt it was suitable. As you live in the same area and share the same interest it's maybe just possible you know him and could explore Paulownia. It is half the weight of Hoop Pine and this would have a considerable advantage if it was suitable. Good luck with your search.

    Default paulownia

    Hi Whitewood,

I will have to look into it. I have never heard of it let alone of its use with aircraft. Do you know who the guy in Cairns was that bought your timber?

    Regards,
    Damian

I'm flat out getting a back log of orders out before Easter and haven't got time to go through my invoices but I'll do it in a few days and let you know the result.

    Default Paulownia for aeroplanes

    Damian,

Have you had time to contact the guy who bought Paulownia to build a part of his aeroplane. Could you put some feed back in the forum, either way is fine, so members know whether it is a suitable timber or not.
