Great burl - good material - Why protect such a thing? Best use would be for woodwork and replace with an Aussie native tree, preferably in a renewable grove of mixed Aussie species that could be harvested and replaced over the next 150 years. Renewable forestry management is much better than preserving such trees IMHO. Humans get so stuck up on age of things. Now, in an aged natural forest environment I can understand that -- the peace and serenity have to be experienced to be believed. BUT, for an old rubbish tree?? Not for my taste anyway.

Lucky it's not growing in Emerald! The tree loppers here would write a report to the council saying it was unsafe and regardless of whether it was or not, the council would then contract them to remove it in case somebody tried to sue them for not acting on the advice! The tree lopping industry is as shonky out here as the OH&S industry is in the mines!!!
Yes - I've had a bad day

Ah so that's what tree it is. I've seen a couple similar to that here in Bloemfontein, not as big but just as much burl.
