Huon Pine
I'm looking at using huon pine in an upcoming project and was wondering what it's like to work with, i.e how does it plane - much tearout/ Does it move?
Can you prepare it for finishing with a hand plane?
I understand it's an oily wood, so a dewaxed white shellac looks like a good option.
Thanks
Andy

Also does it darken with age? Or does that that depend on the finish you use?

In my experience huon pine is a great timber to work with - it machines well and cuts cleanly and easily with hand tools. I do think it's a bit dull visually and it does darken a lot with time. It doesn't tear out unless you make serious mistakes with grain direction. Cheers Dave

Thanks for the reply
I've seen huon pine furniture at a few woodwork galleries and I really like it. I know it looks rather plain with no standout grain, but when finished well it looks great. I'm going to use white shellac as a finish, but before I do I got to get out Neils finishing bible to get the best results!

Surely there are others who have worked with huon pine??
I saw a few pieces of huon pine today (one was quite old) and it was almost yellow. How much of an effect does the finish contribute to this, and is it possilbe to maintain it's original colour (to some degree ofcourse)?

huon
Huon is white when first cut, it turns golden ( like most pines) with age. You can't keep it white.
The birds eye and other feature marks/ faults are black/brown and can add figure and a feature to what can be a bit boring I guess, it depends on how the board is cut to show the fine grain
It is great to work with and easy to finish, the Sydney www show will soon be here and there will be plenty of huon, both from Tassie and Mal will have fresh stock as well.
Hope the exotic boards are well with you Andy, If you want some jarrah burl offcuts to play with let me know.
