    Default Huon Pine

Hi everyone. My first post here, so predictably I am asking for help.

My father has had a load of Huon pine well stacked and stored under cover for ... must be over 30 years. He bought it as supplies even then were running low, so partly as an investment and also for possible use in the future. He hasn't used any of it as far as I know!

He offered it to me as I mentioned that now that I have almost finished building the house, I was set to go into a furniture making frenzy - I've decided that pretty much none of my old furniture is good enough for the new place! The thing is, as nice as Huon is to work with, I don't see it as a furniture timber although I'm sure it is a personal taste thing and others will disagree. (I have my eye on some nice Myrtle for a dining table, and will probably make a coffee table at the same time, and Dad also has a bit of Aussie red cedar I may just have to relieve him of!)

Anyway, I have offered to help sell the Huon for him, but while I know it is worth quite a bit, I'm not sure how much. So any suggestions as to how I can ascertain a fair price, as well as the best way to sell it would be more than welcome. If anyone here is interested, let me know but of course, especially as I am selling it for Dad, I want to get the best price possible ... so sorry, it ain't going to be super cheap! (although if you want the lot some sort of deal is possible).

Ok, sorry for the youngsters (like me!!) but we have measured it and it works out around 650 super feet. It ranges from quite a few 12 x1 boards up to 17 feet long, through to railway sleeper sized lengths (up to 9x6s). It is all rough sawn apart from one 12x1 that I ran through the thicknesser just to see what it is like (very nice!) - that board dressed out at 20mm - with a better thicknesser you might get a bit more than that. The timber is in Hobart, but I can arrange for pictures etc and shipping wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks in advance for any help and/or offers.

    Cheers,

    Malcolm

    Hi Malcolm and welcome,
I bought some huon from Morrisons mill in Queenstown when I was down there recently,
I paid (depending on quality) between $4200 --$5000 per cube,
I'm always interested in huon that I can buy for less than retail (particularly larger sizes)
    pics would be good,
    cheers

what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?

    Pics would be good.

I may be interested in the whole lot depending on price and whether I can find one of my family members in Tassie to store it for me.

I have no idea how much room 650 super feet would occupy.
Roughly how much room would be needed to store it?

    Thanks for the welcomes Ok not sure of the pics protocol on this board but lets try this;

    No?

    Ok, lets try this!

There are a couple of pictures of the pieces I have here (including the dressed 12x1 I was talking about. If you want more I may have to take pics of each piece?

I'd be interested about the sizes available today from Morrisons - I rang Dad, and he is not sure but they may well have come from them back in the seventies. We are talking Strahan rather than Queenstown I take it? I might ring them tomorrow, as I am guessing a premium price for larger sizes (like 12x1s) that is assuming such sizes are readily available at all these days.

Jack, the longest bit is 17 feet, say 5.5 metres - I think there are about 423 super feet in a cubic metre - so we are talking 1.5 ish cubes - but allowing for stacking and odd sizes, I'd say 6x1x1 would do it easily.

    Cheers,

    Malcolm

Another idea is to list it on ebay with lots of photos and let the market decide on the right price.

That's what I'm trying to work out! Make me an offer!!

I have thought about various auction ideas including ebay (or a local auction house) - I figure if it was advertised widely enough it might get a few people interested, and maybe then it could be a job lot or split into smaller quantities. But I'm all for a quiet life so I'd rather someone came to me. I have talked to a couple of local dealers today, so I'll be interested in what they come up with as well.

    Cheers,

    Malcolm

PS. Dad has made a spreadsheet of all the sizes and quantities of each (typical!) so if anyone is interested in seeing that, just send me a pm.

Hi Mal, and welcome to the forum.

Underfoots price of $4,200 - 5,000 per m3 works out to $10 to $12 per super foot for us traditionalist old phaarts.

Morrisons have a largish mill near Queenstown plus a tourist mill at Strahan Esplanade. The other miller of Huon is Island Speciality Timbers near Geeveston.

    Cheers

Thanks for that Graeme and thanks also for the welcome. Yes it must be the tourist side of the Morrison's operation I am remembering - but if that is the case, Dad can't have bought from them originally as he does say the mill was outside of Strachan - and certainly west coast tourism hadn't really kicked into gear back then.

I actually spoke to Brendon at Morrisons this morning - he said that in planks they only have up to 6x1s and the biggest other stock they have now would be 4x4s. As I suggested above, does this mean we should be looking at a premium for 12 x 1 planks and things like 9 x 6, 10 x 3 etc which I would imagine would be in demand for turning platters and bowls etc (amongst no doubt other uses)? If so, any idea how much? I was thinking I should contact one of the high end turners direct - any contacts would be very helpful.

    Cheers,

    Malcolm

Probably "Cowboy Crane" on the road out of Strahan heading to Ocean Beach.

He is still there milling huon or at least his boys and the mill are, Cowboy would be over 80 now.

    Default Birdseye Huon

Hi there Malcolm and welcome to the forum.
I will pay $10-15000 per m3 for any birdseye you have, depending on the frequency of the "eyes"
In your photo`s image 0471 the closest board looks like it has some birdseye in it.
Birdseye in huon are those little dark eyes around which the grain is often swirling around in all directions and looks 3 dimensional on a nicely finished piece.
    Cheers mate
