    Default Ideas for sourcing timber for two small projects

    Hi guys,

    So I’m all set to take on my first projects - that is projects which have the sanction of boss - and the object is to build a coffee table with storage (something like 1m sq with one or two drawers) and a simple cabinet for the Xbox, appleTV, fetchTV and stereo to sit on under the TV (which is wall mounted).

    The boss likes restored / reclaimed and rustic looking furniture and something with that white painted then rubbed back look (is that french provincial or something?)

    Anyway she’s done a great job making some other furniture we’ve had look like that by painting and sanding to her hearts content.

    What I’m looking for is simple ideas on how to get my timber in an affordable and sustainable way.

    So far I’ve only sourced stuff from Local Hardware or north shore, mostly for smaller jobs and used DAR and pre-joined.

    I’m looking around for straightforward designs and/or I’ll copy something I already have and make it up as I go.

    Never done drawers before but I figure I’ll start with a design that I can put drawers in after it is done (maybe insert the sliders but make the drawers second)

    What do you think is a good approach to finding the sort of timber I can work with and which won’t be too costly?

    A lot is going to depend on what equipment or abilities you have. If you can joint and surface plane timber yourself, a cost effective solution may be to hit up a recycling or demolition company. They usually carry what was once hardwood framing timber, so the timber has nail/screw holes. It means that you don't really have a choice what species you're getting or a chance to do grain and color matching between boards, but hey, if you're into the recycled look or are going to paint it anyway, that shouldn't be a concern. Check out your council dump as well - they may have 'market' days where they sell things that are a bit too good to throw away.

    If you can't do the surfacing and jointing yourself, you may be stuck buying dressed timber. Unfortunately I'm not in Sydney so I can't point you to any timber merchants. If you're only buying a few boards here and there, Bunnings or your local hardware store would probably be quite cost effective for dressed timber.

    I don’t have a thicknesser or power plane so I’m going to be struggling to go the cheaper options I guess. Worth checking out the dump idea though.

    I can provide red cedar or camphor natural edged boards thicknessed if you want, to Cremorne for you to collect. You can paint them any colour you want. Do you have a cutting list?
