    Default identification. Hardwood

Does any one have any thoughts on what this timber may be?

Very dense. The sample I have is very small but calcs to 1012kg/m3.

Pics are 61mm diam hand rail.

    colour kinda looks like redgum

Going on the end grain pic I'd be fairly confident in saying that it is redgum but the weight is not quite right which indicates that it might be red Ironbark but then again it might just be a really dense piece.

Got any pics of a freshly planed surface, would help to identify it a bit better.

The piece I have is almost exactly 1000th of a cubic meter so plenty of room for weight error. 61mm diameter 380mm long is 1.095kg

Bit too much tear out in that pic to really tell.

If I get a chance I'll take a pic of some end grain and a freshly planed piece of the red Ironbark tomorrow.
    Cheers

Yes definitely, anyway dog wanted to go out and it's a nice evening, so I have planed some red and grey Ironbark and taken end grain pics as well.

Will post some pics shortly, just waiting for them to upload to my iPad so I can post them.
    Cheers

Going on the latest pics you've posted, I'd say its Ironbark, leaning towards red Ironbark.

Here's some pics of both red and grey Ironbark.

Freshly planed red Ironbark, 200mm wide

    image.jpg

Same with some spirits splashed on it

    image.jpg

End grain of both red and grey, piece on bottom of pic is red.

    image.jpg

Same two as above with spirits to show coloring.

    image.jpg

Grey Ironbark with spirits which has quite a bit of sapwood showing as well.

Thanks very much. I think you are on a winner there. This is another pic with spirits. Tending very much towards the red iron bark. To look at how this Comes up vs the Grey, cracked #### it looks like in place I am saddened.

I guess the next question is, how to bring it back to beauty. They do sand and oil once a year but looking into the cracks the oil isn't Penatrating very deeply. I was thinking sanding back aggressively then several coats of tung oil every 6 months but maybe it needs a poly with uv blocker. This is exposed on a decking rail.

Being Ironbark, you'd be struggling to get any oil to soak in unless you were to submerge it or to be able to flood it but being hand rails it would just drip straight off.

Have heard that Sikkens gives a reasonable good finish with durability.

Have you tried thinning your oil down with turpentine? It makes it penetrate a lot better.
