    Default Identification please

    Hi Guys,

Picked up these lumps on the way home. What do you think it is? I tried a couple of online identification sites and trying to ID by leaves gave me Poison Sumac . Figured it might be time to try a little local knowledge. Picked up in Melbourne if that helps at all.

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Shannon.

Well thanks for bumping the thread at least...

Seriously driving me nuts - it looks so familiar but I cannot put my finger on it.

Leaves look like a type of Fig, and lump one seems to suggest a multi trunk.
    Moreton Bay perhaps??

    Thumbs up

I`d say some type of Ficus from the Photos. Perhaps PortJackson.

Do you get sticky whiteish sap from it?
    how is it for density.

Fig is good to turn green then finish with penetrol.

It's hard to make out from the photos but the leaves appear opposite on the stems?
Leaves on Figs are alternate. The trunk looks familiar. Will see if I can recall.

Default Found a whole one :)

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the tips so far. I knew it looked familiar, there are some more growing not too far from my house . See if this helps with the ID. I have checked it against previous suggestions and I don't think we have a match yet.

Artme, I do not recall any white SAP . For smallish blocks they feel pretty heavy, but then they are green so I would say they might be on the lower end for density. Not really experienced enough to say for sure. I could get all Archimedes on them but it's a Sunday and I am lazy.

Budgieman, the leaves are opposite, more than two too. so sometime there will be three or four coming off the twig at the same place. I think this was termed whorled?

Whorled is the right term but stuffed if I know what it is.
Been through the books and come up with some possibles but nothing concrete.
The pics of the flowers help but not knowing if deciduous, flowering time etc makes
    it a bit harder.
    Cheers

    Hi Shannon
I'd say your tree is a Photinia, probably P. robusta.

now we are getting somewhere That looks like it, thanks Brian.

    So the million dollar question?
Anybody worked with it much, and is it any good for turning? Looks like pretty even growth ring so i'd be happy if it was reasonably stable cos i'd like to do some more finished green pieces. I will spin a couple of bits up before DJ's if I get a chance.

    Ahhhhh sweet sweet closure
    Cheers,
    Shannon.

Photinia!! Never seen P. Robustus that I can recall.

Have turned some small offcuts from local Photinias used for hedging. Was Ok to turn but no real indication of ho that may go.
