    Default Can anyone identify this

Just hoping that someone may be able to identify this blank that I have prepared for a pen. It may be a QLD species as I got a batch of various blanks from Mapleman a few years ago, but they weren't labeled and it could have been one of those.
It looks like a very fine version of Silky Oak but my knowledge of wood species is very limited.

    Thanks,
    Dallas

I will go with QLD Maple from the images, and being from Mapleman I reckon its pretty much a 100% ID.

It is reasonably light but was quite hard to drill and saw.

    Dallas,

Looks a bit like "tulip oak", it is a Queensland species used a lot for flooring. Have a look on google.

Thanks Log Dog. Here are a couple of photos of the finished pen which hopefully confirms the species for you. Bit hard to photograph this time of day with the CA finish and all the reflections.

Well maybe I need to get my eyes tested but that doesn't look like any Flindersia I've worked with. I have never noticed a fine ray-fleck like on your pen on any maple I've had, but perhaps I just haven't seen enough examples....

The quarter sawn profile matches Qld Maple/Silkwood
    The colour is also consistent
I agree though the crown sawn face is inconclusive
That said Qld Maple can be quite variable in appearance

OK, I recant & retract & apologise to all!

I was taken in by the "ray fleck" looking much more prominent than I'm used to, but I guess I was fooled by the scale - I don't look at a lot of pen-blank sized samples & my mind made the pieces look a lot larger than they are.

So for some comparative scale, here's a pic of 3 pieces cut radially, top Qld Maple, centre Tulip Oak, bottom Silky oak (G. robusta):

    Med rays cf b.jpg

When I first looked at the pics my mind played tricks & calculated the size of the medullary rays as being the size of those in the centre sample, which is why I agreed with Jim's suggestion of Tulip oak. Now I've got the proper scale, I can see it fits perfectly well with Maple.....

    Cheers,
    IW

Yes my blank looks just like the top piece in both scale and colour.
