Identifying timber for outdoor fence
Hi there,
I’m wanting to make a fence very similar to the one in this picture (taken in Australia). Board and batten style.

You can also see it here - COTTON HANDLOOMED THROW | CLAY & NATURAL – Imprint House
I’d really appreciate some help with the following questions.
Note: I can see there is a black stain. I will use something similar. Like this one. Palm Beach Black Timber Stain | Porter's Paints
- Anyone know what wood it might be? Rough sawn treated pine? The shape of that hole in one of the battens indicates it might not by pine to me...is it an aussie hardwood?
- If I use rough sawn hardwood, would the stain take as well as treated pine?
- Any guess on the dimensions of those battens? Finding it very very hard to find something similar to buy (I live in the Sydney/Wollongong area)
Big thanks in advance!
Cam

Hi Cam. Good detective work on the hole. That will be a gum vein pocket, so yes hardwood. Battens look like 50mm wide, boards would be 100mm. Not a fence but cladding for a wall (typical paling fence is 150mm unders/boards and 100mm overs/ battens). It will take stain fine but would need to be dry. Probably have to get direct from a mill or fencing supplier.

Hi there,
Really appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction on this one.
For anyone else interested, i found these guys that offer something close to what I'm looking for - see link below for instructions. very handy. These use Vic Ash (which will be in short supply due to Vic govt changes to logging apparently)
https://radialtimbers.com.au/wp-cont...ide-2022-1.pdf
They also have a charcoal finish - Timber Finishes - Radial Timber Sales
Im also looking into a cheaper alternative, using much cheaper 100x15mm timber fence pailings and 50x25mm garden stakes (as long as not too warped). Links below.
Hardwood 100 x 15 Palings 1800mm
Just a moment...
