Imuntan Basswood
A whole heap of this stuff is selling at an auction in Brisbane. I have never heard of the stuff, and could not find it on the net. Plenty of info on American Basswood, which is great for carving, but nothing on this Imuntan stuff, which sounds like it comes from SE Asia. Any comments on this wood?

Duck,
Its possible that what you have might be "Ramin" (Gonystyluss spp).....it seems to also be referred to as Basswood on a lot of websites. Comes from Malaysia, Indonesia and Fiji.
Its also listed on more than one site as being overexploited and a slow regenerating timber.
Cheers

Possible I guess, but I don't know what Ramin is either, and don't have the scientific name. This basswood is one of the whitest timbers I have ever seen, and with virtually no grain or features - very plain. They are selling it in long lengths & sizes up to 140 x 50 or thereabouts.
They are advertising it as a cabinet timber, but I have never seen it used in any shops in Aust before. I wonder how it got to be selling at the auction. Normally it would have been excess stock from some company, but there is so much of it for sale.

Not really. Pretty dry, and not any noticeable odour.

Duck,
I know a furniture maker here in Brissy that uses it for making drawer sides if he is using mechanical slides. It is pretty soft and wouldn't be good for much else from what i have seen.
