    Default Ironbark (?) from Melb

    My sister had a dead tree chopped down this week. It has been dead for ~5 years and there is another live one nearby. Before cutting down I thought it was an Ironbark, but seeing the blocks, it has the thickest and strangest bark I have ever seen. Any ideas as to species? Sorry no nuts or flowers that I could see.

    My shoulder is too sore still to lift the log pieces but the bark was fine . I'm looking at making some pen and small pepper grinder blanks from the larger segments, as the bark looks so interesting, although it will probably need stabilising.

    The timber will stay there until I can lift them some time off in the future, but as they are not sealed, they may just stay there . If the bark blanks work out I'll be back for more of that .

    It looks like grey ironbark without the lichen on it. It could be the small leafed version of the grey iron bark. Cheers WC

    Red Ironbark, lots of it around here. I use the bark for pen blanks, makes great pens (uses a bit of CA though)

    I too have made pens out of the Red Ironbark bark from Qld (cast with blue resin), just this looked so different, almost a concrete consistency and timber more a brown rather than the dark red we get. Must be just a location difference. A little CA will do as a stabiliser on the pen blanks whilst I am in Melb .

    Thanks WC, could be as the timber doesn't look red enough. I am also aware of what we call brown ironbark in Qld but I don't know species in Melb
