Thread: Ironwood availability and uses?
-
17th November 2009, 10:01 AM #16
I have played around with some Aussie timbers, but to date, Jarrah was the only one that took my fancy. This Ironwood is sensational, but may be just the sample I tried - some other pictures I've searched for don't present nearly as nicely.
I will have to investigate some of the species you mention..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
Regards, Woodwould.

Terry Gordon makes his hand planes from this stuff.
Uses it 'cause its dense and stable.
Oz has the best timbers in the world.
If you have over 2000 posts and have only tried Jarrah get off the 'puter and pick up some tools.
Seems the more posts on this the more credability untill a clanger like this is dropped.

Well might have some good news for you - the pic was taken from my table on the back verandah. The table originally had seats along either side, which are two thin slabs - about 2500 long x 300 x 25+ & I still have them. At present they are just being used as shelves downstairs & I had considered selling them. If you like I can sand them off and get pics for you but wouldn't be till next Monday at the earliest.
Other than that I saw some large pieces of ironwood at one of the wholesalers not so long ago - they were approx 300+ x 300+ x 2000, so damned heavy. If you would like me to chase up, I can.
Third option I have been offered anything off a property near Cooktown - includes ironwood. Only problem is ironwood is now protected - not sure if its only particular areas though, will do some homework on that, but won't be till after wet season as I have too much contract work on.
Cheers,

That's very generous of you bcoz. I would be very interested in your 'shelves', but how I'd get them down to Melbourne might prove a bit of a headache.
