Default IWCS Wood Samples for Dense Australian Timbers

    Hi Folks,

Who out there in Australia sells IWCS (International Wood Collectors Society - IWCS - Member Listings and Requests ) wood samples [6"x3"x0.5"] of Australian timbers? I am trying to buy samples of the Australian timbers whose air-dry densities exceed 1200 kg/m^3. Here are the ones that I know of which I do not have and would like to buy. Any ideas?

You sure come up with some strange ones runge, Any particular reason for the extremely dense timbers? We have some really nice not so dense ones as well you know...lol
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

"Any particular reason for the extremely dense timbers?"

Since there are 100,000+ trees and shrubs yet people only buy a small subset of these, there must be some implicit ranking system in each timber buyer's mind. Timbers that routinely reach an air-dry density of 1250 kg/m^3 are very much an exception; <0.1% of species. They are at the very high end of the scale in terms of mechanical properties. High timber density confers other benefits to trees such as resistance to insects and fungi as well as better water management. To me, they are marvels of nature just like the cheetah or the blue whale.

Hi George - Thanks for the suggestion. He hasn't been responding to my emails lately (maybe I should take a hint??) . I also heard that money is getting tight at the FPC

Jobs slashed at Forest Products Commission - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

and that may be impacting GSTIG. Anyway, the last time I checked, getting >20kg of these woods from GSTIG to somewhere like the US isn't really feasible because of limited transportation options (i.e cost, cost and cost). I guess this is all compounded by weak economies and the relative obscurity of many timbers from WA. It's too bad that Ian doesn't get on this forum and drum up some demand ...
