    Default Jacaranda

Neighbour rings me today and says...
    Want a Jacaranda log?
    Sure...why not?
    And it is a brute
Around 950mm girth consistently along its 2400mm length
    Fiddleback top to bottom!
Was planted nearly a century ago
    Gonna be real pretty

    Will keep you posted Keith
There will be some really nice figure
Not forgetting it was growing on some pretty awful soil
Dare say it would have been a slow growing tree
Will be a pleasure to mill

    Sliced log in 3 sections

    1 x 900mm
    2 X 750mm

The trailer didn't enjoy the weight
Just the 2 billets alone were around a log cube

Gave billets a hose down today to remove any dirt externally
Enhanced the colour of the end grain somewhat
    Here's a couple of pics

    Couldn't help myself
While the hand planer was buzzing I attacked the end grain of one of the billets
To my surprise some of the grain is orange
    Some good Fiddleback too :thumbs_up

Grabbed remaining half of the tree today
    22 billets in total
    All with strong compressional Fiddleback
Evidence there will be quite a bit of birds eye too

Hi LD just interested why you chopped it into short pieces. Instead of slabbing it into boards , what you doing with it?

This tree will be sliced into boards, turning blocks and handle stock
Box making and fancy turnery in mind
It will be quarter sawn in its entirety
Some instrument grade stuff will be extracted too
And the odd large bowl or 2
Small billets like these often lend to good recovery rates
And perfect size for what I need
This old tree will will live on for many years to come!
Will post pics in the 'milling ' section ' soon

Great score You will find the older trees have a dark honey colour once seasoned, in lieu of the normal lighter colour, and as you have found full of figure.

I scored some branches of an old tree (>100 years old) that had fallen in a huge storm. They trimmed the tree back and then stood it back up to try and save it. It formed part of an avenue planted by the pioneers and now used for weddings. The branches I scored were still >600mm dia. Below is a 450mm bowl I made from some.

    Yes a good score indeed!
    All billets now end sealed

Jacaranda is a delight to work
And very stable on the quarter

To be honest I don't remember, but most of my stuff gets a lacquer finish, these days clear car lacquer, but back then it may have been Nitro Cellulose Lacquer (satin)

    All sliced and diced
The Butt Log was defect free pretty much
Some spalting in the upper limbs though
    However plenty of figure throughout
Few pics to highlight the figure and to show how pretty spalted/punky wood can be...wonderful colours
