    Default Jarrah vs Karri

    Hi,
I have recently acquired some recycled Jarrah ... or is it Karri???
The wood came from a pergola and is not dressed. I have used a block plane to smoothe a section to look at the grain and it looks like Jarrah. Is there any way that I can be sure it is Jarrah and not Karri ??
    Regards
    Les

Les, Karri is denser than Jarrah (850 vs 920) and is generally not as reddish as jarrah. Karri tends to be more straight and finer grained. You need to grab a piece of known jarrah (from hardware or somewhere) and compare the two.

If you do a search on-line you will find some useful databases with characteristics and pictures. Google is your friend.

The splinter test works. Jarrah leaves a black ash and Karri white.
The trouble with Pergola timber is that it could be other species of timber as well. No problem whatever it is as long as it dresses up well then use it.

    Thanks guys.

It looks like the splinter test. Will perform with the fire department on stand-by.
    Regards
    Les
