    Default Kari prices

I have been offered about 8 lenghts of Karri (sp), the WA timber for $12 a piece.
5.5m x 140mm x 25mm roughsawn, I have never used this before and just bought one piece to have a play with. Very heavy, deep red and seems to have a lot of splits if that is the right word to use.
The surface after planing is filled with fine cracks about 5 to 20mm long but not deep.
Can anyone tell me anything about this timber, good points, bad points etc.

At that price its cheaper than 25x50 pine from Bunnies, even if you use it for carcase work on stuff, you are on a winner.

It's a great hardwood. I had my floors in karri when I renovated a few years back. Looks great. I haven't done any woodwork with it so I can't help there. At that price buy all you can.

Never used it,but in W.A here it has been known to be a good structural timber and can be susceptible to white-ant birthday party.

According to the OZ wood bible Wood in Australia by K.R. Bootle
Heartwood pale pink to reddish brown.Sapwood whitish and usually easy to distinguish.
Texture somewhat coarse but even.Grain often interlocked.
    GD about 1200kg/cub metre:ADD about 900kg/cubic metre.
Careful handling is required when drying to inhibit surface checking.
    Pre-drilling required for nailing.
Variable in gluability.Does not have a good reputation in regard to paint holding.
    Heartwood moderately durable.
General uses include construction, flooring panelling structural plywood, shipbuilding.

    Cheers
