    Default Kauri Pine

    Hi,
I have a Kauri pine that needs to be removed. It is approx 20 metres tall. As it is going to cost over $1000.00 to bring down, rather than seeing it go to mulch is there a market for the timber to help defray the cost. I'm located in Brisbane. Any help willl be appreciated.
    Regards. John.

Yes,there should be a market for it,as it is a well known furniture species...however,the wood borers are active at the moment, and they love Kauri pine when freshly felled..a job better left for the winter months..

For Pete's sake don't let it go near a chipper or any other heathen machine!!

Seems there will be a lot of good useable timber in that tree.

Mapleman is dead right, borer is going to be your worst enemy at the moment. It would be fair to assume a long borer season as this is the norm after a long wet spell and we sure have had one of those. Your tree has natural resistance to pest attack while live, but once on the ground, it is totally vulnerable. I wouldnt put a saw near it till winter.

You can keep the borers out at any time of year by just mixing some Borax in really hot water and pouring it over the timber with a watering can - too easy!

Alot easier leaving the felling and milling for the winter months, which isn't far away..some variety of borers are really hard to control...Borax is not 100% effective also ..and i reiterate..borers love kauri pine (sapwood and heartwood)..particularly the unseasoned sawn stuff,so if there is alot of log to mill,it will be a difficult and time consuming task to keep them(borers) at bay in sawn form..thats my advice MM
