    Default Kauri Pine V Hoop Pine which is which???

    Hi all

    Just wondering if someone has a simple way of determining the difference between Kauri Pine and Hoop Pine? From what I see in my restoration work or general fereting about with timber I cant see a great difference between the two. Certainly not enough to put money on it anyways!

    I just picked up a dismantled staircase from an old terrace house and was surprised that all the timber seemed to be Hoop or Kauri. Would love to know which it was!

    Agreed! It is difficult to tell but one thing I have noticed with some pieces i have stripped back and then DO finished is that KP has a reddish tinge in places.

    Agree with Art,
    I machined this piece of qld kauri a while back and it has a purpleish tinge along with orange streaks, I find hoop is a little more consistant in colour, a nice gold

    Thanks Gents, much appreciated. My problem is I have never really seen them side by side at one time to properly guage it. Thanks for the pix. After looking at my pile not sure I am any closer however I am probably leaning towards hoop.
