Laminated Hardwood Beam
I picked up about 2000mm of 60 x 200 laminated hardwood beam from a rubbish pile on a building site up the road from the current job I am doing today. I am wondering if anyone knows what glues are used to laminate these beams and would it be suitable to use as a chopping board?

Hardwood beams used to be laminated with an urea glue ,
but this may have changed in the last 30 years.
It should be ok for cutting boards

G'day.
If it has a red/dark brown glue line, it is probably Resorcinol Formaldehyde.
Melamine Urea Formaldehyde (MUF) is also used.
Both are known to cause health issues, however, the small amount in a glued member should not cause any worries.Hooroo.

Neither cause health issues once set - the formaldehyde fumes when the glue is liquid and being used and curing are the main issue.
Sealing the boards with polyurethane would ensure that no vapours are emitted, but that is not a known issue with laminated beams in any case.
So - with this laminated off-cut there would be no problems when used as a cutting board - just oiling would suffice.

Thanks guys, that has kind of put me off so I will have to just stick it on the rack and wait for another use for it.
