    Default Leopard gum from work

    Hey guys I'm a school based apprentice with my dad in metalwork but the place that we work at stopped their machinery a while back and will be closing down but we still use the work shop but anyway I heard a chainsaw so I went for a walk at lunch and I asked what timber they were cutting down and they said leopard gum so I asked for a piece but the next day they pulled the whole tree out of the ground and sad you can have the rest of it so now I have aapproximately 7 metre leopard gum tree sitting at my dad's work the picture is of the first piece I got. So any one with a large chainsaw around redcliffe/pine rivers area who would be willing to give us a hand cutting it up will be welcome.image.jpg

    Actually not a "Gum"as we know them. Leopard Tree is the usual description, ceasalpenia ferra, ( I think ) is
    the scientific name. Comes from Brazil where it is known as pau ferra - ironwood.

    Timber is dense and hard. Sapwood is loved by borers. Heartwood has a beautiful fine grain pattern which works and turns well and takes a very good finish. Will polish up like ebony.

    Seal the ends straight away before you decide what to do with it.

    I have no idea how the timber behaves if milled into planks and boards.

    Artme is on the money on species etc. That one has a really good black centre that only develops in the older trees my tree lopper advised. I cut a heap from a very old tree late last year, extremely heavy timber and the silica kills the chain quickly when cutting. Dropped off ~0.5t to my local club. As mine dried the black with very light sapwood similar to yours turned into a streaky black/grey/brown in the centre with white/yellow/orange/green in the sapwood. Turns really well and takes a good finish. Also pretty stable.
