Light weight timber.
Hi,
I am looking for some recommendation for light weight timber (hardwood preferably) for a bookshelf or rack.
I know I can use pine (hoop and radiata), but I want something that is not so knotty... Something with straight and fine grain, not too expensive and readily available in Melbourne.
I have heard and read about some of the imported timber from Indonesia and Malaysia like Jelutong and Kauri which really suit my needs, but am concerned about depriving the orang utans of their natural habitat....
I'm thinking of White Beech or European Beech....
Can anyone recommend any affordable, readily available, straight grain light weigh timber?

Light weight timber
To find timber with all the specifications including cheap will be difficult. Have a look at paulownia-timber-sales.com.au or portphillip.com.au. They supply Paulownia which is light weight, straight fine grain, hard wood species, no knots if you pay extra, plantation grown in Aust and renewable (regrows from the stump of the felled tree) I can freight to Melbourne.

The cheapest timber you can get in Melbourne is Radiata pine.
everything else is expensive

You can buy Plantation grown Kauri from Mathews timber in Vermont, also, Plantation grown Mahogany from Fiji. Doesn't cost an arm and a leg, but its more expensive than radiata
