    Unhappy log to milled timber

Does anyone have a formula to work out how much milled timber can be obtained from a log as back sawn and quarter sawn.

Don't know if such formulae exist as there are a lot of variables: waste lost to saw kerf, ratio of sapwood to true wood, taper of log, rotten heartwood, buttressing or bark inclusion or corrugated surface causing more waste etc etc.
