Default How do I saw a log to make the best of the timber

My son sent me a log of 'Jam' (one of the Acacia family and hard as) and I only have a small chainsaw to cut it into usable timber. Would appreciate any advice/suggestions/tips on the best way of going about it. The log is 150mm in diameter and about 1.5m long. If there is anyone in the Perth area that can saw it for me I am happy to pay
I hope to be able to get two wide strips to edge the sides of a coffee table

A chainsaw will turn most of that small log into sawdust.
You are better off splitting it down the middle with your bandsaw.
You might want to break it up into a couple of pieces and/or co-opt a helper.
Hope you have a nice sharp blade.

There is discolouration in the cut end that looks like very early stage incipient decay to me too. Maybe it's just a camera angle thing, or maybe its just a few isolated spots and we can still pull boards out of it.

Only way to find out is saw it. I see bandsaw, you mention chainsaw. At worst this a good learning exercise. What other toys do we have to play with?

I picked up about 4 ton of Jam last year, sizes from 100mm to 300mm diameter.
Firstly you must seal the cut ends ASAP as I can vouch to it splitting badly.
I made a beautiful plant stand / pedestal for some, it was great until I brought it indoors.
Then the base split because of the indoor temperature. I have CA'd it but will need to turn another base when the timber is really dry.

The bandsaw is only 10" and struggles with 50 - 75mm Jam even with a new ripping blade, only other option is a hand rip saw but I don't think I have enough time left on this earth for that. Thanks for the positive response and as you say, at worst this will be a good learning exercise
