Default Timber types & Where to buy

Hi, I am new to the Woodwork forums. This is my first post. I plan to get into using a ScrollSaw and I would like to know what timbers I can use and where should I start looking in Sydney.

Depends entirely on what saw you buy ,some can cut up to 50mm some not so big a cut, try before you buy if possible and at the very least get a quick release blade type. The secret is to go slowly and allow for the saw to work if not you won't be pleased with the results.Cant help with timer supply in your area but you should be able to source from a friendly cabinetmaker.

The challenge with a scroll saw is finding thin stock. #1 is craft stores. They often sell thin wood stock, and sometimes even the patterns.

Some larger hardware/home stores sell thinner stock. Sometime. It's generally boring stuff

If you're looking for more exotic stuff, mail order guitar tonewood suppliers can be good choices, as they traffic in 3-4 mm thick stock all day long, and frequently end up with mismatch stock.

Another good option is to join up with a local woodworking club. Often, they have plenty of thin stock available, and if not often have a larger band saw and a thickness sander you could use to resaw more standard stock.

Welcom to the Forum. You are only limited by your imagination. Small, specialist millers (of which I am one) can usually come up with something to keep you happy. We can resaw and dress air dried material to a thickness suitabe for scroll work and you get book matched pieces at the same time!
