Looking for English Oak and Willow
Hi all
This is a bit of a wierd request but please hear me out
I make magic wands, art pieces for people who sincerly believe in and work with magic.
Often I get asked to use specific woods and materials that have personal significance to the owner, and usually I can find what I need. Most of my work uses pieces that retain their natural shape but recently I have been commissioned to make two new ones, both that require me to use my newly aquired wood turning skills.
As I am fairly new to wood turning and in the past have not had to purchase wood for my work (as I usually use found sticks ) I have no idea how to go about finding an appropriate piece each of of English Oak and Willow (approx 5cm square 50cm long).
I know I risk being laughed at for my unusual hobby (I can feel the Harry Potter jokes already forming ) but may I please ask if anyone knows where I might find such woods. I figured of all the forums around, this would probably be the best place to ask .
Cheers
Jo
PS. If anyone is particularly interested and it won't bother you, some of my previous work is here: Applegrove Online

I have a rural block with 400mtr frontage to the Murrumbidgee river head waters with enough willow trees to keep you supplied forever.
Trouble is getting it to you.
You can collect it your self if you want.
Near Adaminaby.
Go for a Ski weekend.

I have some 50mm thick English oak slabs but am in Melb. Probably enough to make 20 wands out of smallest slab! Plan for the future - it looks bright!

Sorry its taken me a little while to reply. I thought the thread was dead as I didn't receive any notifications in my email that there were replies and didn't think to check. Thankyou for your warm welcome and your compliment Tankstand. Do you have a photo? I would love to see your work.
Woodfalla, you wouldn't consider selling me a small slice or two would you? *cheeky grin* I would pay a fair price for it plus postage of course.

If you want some willow, buy an old cricket bat from the Sunday market. It will be well seasoned at least.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

A lad at my daughter's school wants to make a cricket bat.
Are there any suppliers of seasoned english willow in Adelaide area?
Or should he just go fossicking along the Murray ?
regards
Alan J
