Dont know if these places have timber that you would call cheap, also depends what type you get.
Specialty Timbers up at Toronto is a good place, reasonable prices in my opinion and a very friendly helpful guy there.
or you could try Trend Timbers down in Sydney, only dealt with these guys once and prices seemed ok, had a lot of turning pieces there are their open day ... I think they have another open day either this month or the next.Brett

Specialty Timbers has a really good range - including a lot of unusual stuff - recycled, figured, veneers etc. He's not really dirt cheap, but definitely fair & reasonable, and great to deal with. I prefer him to deal with over Trend personally - but I've not been to Trend more than a few times.
Trend is definitely more 'professional', more organised, carry tools etc - but I kinda like ratting around huge racks of all sorts of timbers at Specialty finding the perfect piece for a particular job
There's also a guy at Berkely Vale - near Mingara on the same road - who sells timber, including slabs etc. He can be cheaper than the other guys, especially on common stuff like camphor laurel, but he doesn't have a great range, and no pre-cut blanks etc.
Other than that, the only truly cheap way to get turning timbers is through tree loppers etc.The Australian Woodworkers Database - over 3,500 Aussie Woods listed: http://www.aussiewoods.info/

I prefer the specialty timbers place for the same reason as Darryl, plus they seem to have more timber sizes suitable for my scrolling where trend seems to mainly cater for turners.

Aside from wood from loppers which is definately the cheapest I've found the cheapest wood supply is firewood suppliers. I picked up about 20 assorted mallee root pieces for turning, both red and white, for about a dollar a piece. I've been unable to top that price anywhere. Takes a little looking sometimes but most suppliers will be only to happy to help. Tip I picked up last time I went; don't climb their wood piles. They're as scared of getting sued nowdays as everyone.

Sorry, forgot to add, I'm about to post a few pics of my first turned piece from the mallee in the pics section.
