Default Looking for a good timber yard

    Hey there all-

I am new to this forum, I am currently a student at The Australian School of Fine Furniture in Tasmania. Also I am from America, so I don't know alot about mainland Australia. But a friend from the school and I are going to be coming up to Melbourne for the working with wood show. And I am looking for a timber yard near there. Down here in Tassie our timber selection seems to be small, Blackkwood, Mrytle and Huon Pine are the major choices. I'd like to work with some other Australian timbers likke Jarrah and She Oak. If you could please let me know of any good places and any other nice timbers to work with, I would appreciate it much.

    Default Tasmanian Timber

    Kaleo,
Yep, know how you feel, I've been restricted to our Tasmanian timbers for all of my woodworking life.

You do get a bit sick of blackwood, huon pine, myrtle, king billy pine, celery top pine, horizontal scrub, goldie wood, native olive, leatherwood, musk, blackheart sassafras, silver wattle, doral, golden sassafras and various eucs.

I'd love to be "restricted" to just Tassie woods

If in Melbourne, you can't go past Australian Furniture Timbers (see http://www.afttimbers.com/). Heaps of others too.

She Oak & Bull Oak grow down here also, but you will not find it in commercial outlets. I cut some up for boxes a couple of years ago, give me a pm, with the size you are after; may be able to help.

I'll be over for the Timber & Working with Wood Show in Melbourne, might catch up with you there.

The only piece of Myrtle I ever tried to turn was that well seasoned it was like trying to turn a piece of steel - spent more time picking it up after flew out the chuck than I did turning it.

well i didnt know that, whats the sheok and bull oak like, same species as up here...does it look the same ? got some pics mate...?

I have oft wonderd what it wood be like living in tassie, having some really nice tassie woods but not having direct access to the woods we r used to up here, both rainforest and desert woods..

i ahve heard stories recenlty of people shipping containers to tassie of mainland woods, seems a bit strange considering the woods avilable there..

    Default recycled timber

    Welcome Kaleo,
Besides the wide variety of timber at the woodworking show there are a couple of timber recyclers in Melbourne area that have a large range of recycled timber at a cost of course!
Shiver Me Timbers in Williamstown and Australian Recycled Timber in Campbellfield can supply you with a range of timber.
    Enjoy your stay!
