magnolia substitue?
HI everybody, I am new here but I am hoping that someone may be able to help me out.
I am starting on a project that traditionally uses Japanese Honoki wood (magnolia wood) and before I go to the trouble of having some shipped over from japan I am wondering if we have an australian timber that would be a good substitute and be easier to get a hold of?? I know that in america most guys use poplar, alder or sometimes bass wood in place of the japanese magnolia because they share similar properties (primarily being relatively easy to carve, and with low salt and resin content)
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Josh

If you want to come to Melbourne I have heaps of poplar and eldar is very common hear.
Melia azederach ( pride of India, neem, Persian Lilac, Texas Umbrella Tree, Japanese Bead Tree or Australian White Cedar and many other common names as it is a trully cosmopolitan tree) is quite common in Brisbane and might be good.
Camphor is a weed in brissy and may be good. If you can't find any ask a local tree surgeon or even a tree lopper would know camphor.

OK guys, thanks a lot for the suggestions. I am familiar with most of those trees, now I just have to find somewhere in brisbane that is happy to supply me with the relatively small quantity I need. Hopefully thursday I'll get the chance to hunt some down and I'll post the results of my search when I am done, just in case anyone else from brisbane is trying to find suppliers of similar timbers.
Hmmm melbourne, what I wouldnt give to be back down there.
Thanks again, Josh

G'day.
You could also use White Beech or Silver Quandong...
Both of these timbers are very pale & cut beautifuly with a sharp tool.
Try calling Png Quality Timbers at WOODFORD &
