    Default Maple maple

Hi. Got my hands on a few m3 of maple logs recently. Not sure of the exact variety but looks very nice stuff. Not figured like my usual gear but nice for a change. Anyone had much experience using it here?

This is a true Maple from overseas. There's all sorts of exotics on the old farms down here. Lots of European oak, ash, poplar, walnut etc. [emoji106]

    TasSc,

Looks very much like my American Hard Maple. Lovely tight grain. I use it for jewellery boxes. Quite hard (harder than American Black Walnut).

I visited with Mike Hosaluk in Saskatoon years ago and he was turning bowls from Rock Maple.
It was the rejects from Maton guitars and was from Chillawack in the Rockies in BC.
    Lovely stuff to turn.
A well known Turner from Sydney was run out of town in Chillawack following his ‘Acres of dross’ comment when judging the local woodturners exhibition.

Does look like Sugar or "Rock" Maple, alright - those fine brown lines are characteristic. I encountered plenty of it when living in Canada for 10 years, along with a couple of the "soft" maples. It's a good wood for anywhere you need a fine-grained, hard wood. It's not all that hard by Aussie wood standards, though harder than Qld Maple (& Cliff, I'm sitting at a desk make of Qld. Maple as I type, & tbh, the two have only the most superficial resemblance to my eyes ). Despite not being as hard as say, Jarrah, you'll be surprised at how quickly it dulls plane edges. It's not classed as a highly stable wood, but stable enough for most purposes if you allow for seasonal movement.

If you're wondering what to do with it, the smooth, splinter-free wood makes great bench tops - I can vouch for that, after 35 or more years at this one: Bench original red.jpg

Thanks for the info. It's definitely harder than Blackwood but mills better. It feels stiffer... I also noticed it's not very wet inside like my usual Blackwood etc and I don't know if if just that maple are less wet or because the logs have been down 6 months which usually doesn't change Blackwood log much down here. Trying to decide on what to mill it into. A couple of logs have potential for crotch figure so I think some turning blanks from the figured sections.[emoji106]

I think we are all feeling very jealous Jason

It is absolutely wonderful for box making, but in my humble woodworking experience that's about all I make Gave up myself on buying it as it is way too expensive from Matthews and Brittains

I especially love how it finishes off the plane, smooth as the proverbial baby's bottom

Hi Bob. It definitely feels like a nice timber alright. May I ask what was the price when you were buying it? I'm trying to come up with a price for it and thought I'd put some up on the market place here.[emoji106]

Nice to work, the stuff I have came from a 10 pin bowling alley floor.

Nasty to recover the wood tough as I've never seen so much steel in a wood floor, bolts, screws, nails at 150 to 200 mm spacings through the sides of each board.

That was a few years ago and I honestly can't recall.

You could always jst ring Matthews or Brittains and ask them the price per M3
On second thought, jsut roughly it would ahv ebeen over $30 per super foot. Ridiculous price for a hobbyist to pay.

I think my old work was paying around $4-5k per cube for Rock Maple
