Marks on Tassie Myrtle
I recently purchased some Tasmanian Myrtle 6” X 1” planks and they have darker “splotches” on them as if it was oil spilt on the timber. Many of the planks have these marks.
They seem to be related to the timber and not to any spillage due to being right through the planks. Some of the splotches seem to be around imperfections like small knots in the timber.
Any clues as to what these marks are and more importantly how to remove/hide them. They are going to be used as part of a bar for the daughter and SWMBO thinks they look unsightly.

About wood borer ...............
Hi from Tassie.........I have sawn murtle and yes it does have its own characteristics, some of the small areas you are saying is a nice feature and the begining of a knot i would say hence the dark blotch around that area.I have made a murtle Kitchen and it has borer holes in it and the blothches you talk about but not real noticable till you look close but to me it is part of the character and i dont mind it at all.Myrtle does also have some three d characteristics too,it looks different every direction you look at it.Last week we milled some myrtle slabs and really top stuff too,the biggest was 33"one end and 29" the other by 2" thick and 6' long also heaps of smaller ones.If you want to know more please dont hesitate....

Thanks Tasman,
Nice part of the world down there. I have spent a bit of time touring the mainland and Flinders Island.
I don't mind the marks so I will sell them as a feature to SWMBO. I had a good look at the other planks and they also have similar marks.

hi woodborer,
im pretty sure youve got what is called tiger myrtle!
the more markings and darker the markings make it more of a feature grade timber so up goes the price.
i could be wrong and possibly barking up the wrong markings but im sure someone will let me know.
