Material for semi-permanent moisture probes
I am drying some slabs about 50 mm thick.
I am going to use a pin type moisture meter to monitor how the drying is going. The stack is tied up tightly to try to keep the slabs as straight as possible. To save breaking the stack apart each time I measure moisture I would like to install probes for convenient measurement. As the timber is intended for a kitchen bench top I can drill holes in what will be the underside.
Can I get away with using ordinary nails or do I need to get some stainless steel? Would corrosion of the nails over a period of months give a false reading.? I will need to use probes of similar diameter to the probes on the meter.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

I have no experience apart from my genetic moisture meter I bought from Aldi.
Here is an article by the US forestry dept that used silver paint on either side of a wooden probe.p with wires connected to the silver paint sides.

One problem that may occur, if your meter is using resistance, is the length of the connecting wires.
I would think stainless would be preferable fir the probes but that is only a guess.

I've used pieces of 1mm and 3mm diameter SS TIG rods as pins and attached ring crimp connectors . Then drill slightly undersize holes in the timber and tap these into place. On the ends of the copper wires I also attach crimp ring crimp connectors and attach copper wires and join these to the SS ring crimp using small brass screws.
The important wood dryness measurements are usually done when the wood is much more resistive than either the Cu wire or the SS so the resistance of these doesn't really impact on the measurements.
