Maximum veneer thickness
What is the maximum thickness veneer could be before it proves too strong for the glue and cracks/splits occur (ie it breaks away from the substrate). I suppose it depends on the wood and the cut (radial/quarter or tangenital/flat).
Has anyone succesfully glued a 120mm (or wider) piece of 4mm (or thicker) veneer of any wood onto a ply/mdf/solid wood substrate (at 90degrees) succesfully?Rusty

JB, this has been a great debate for years and years. The majority of the realy good veneerers both here in Aus and Overseas generaly agree that 2mm is the maximun thicknes before it starts behaiving like timber. And as you point out radial/quarter or tangenital/flat becomes more of an issue the thicker it becomes. 4mm is getting to the Intrasia/parquetry stage. It is possible but care must be taken. Qtr sawn and glue that has good elasticity like PVA or Urea with 20% PVA or even good old fashion hide glue. If you go 4mm stay away from glue that is ridgid like epoxy

I think i remember either Sam Maloff or James Krenov writing about "real" Veneer, 4mm +. Being so think it allowed thrm to add profiles to the edges.
But it was applied to a solid timber substrate, (same grain direction) so it did behave like timber, but was no problem as the timber used as the substrate had similar qualities.
They used hide glue from memorySteven Thomas
