Are the various gum trees good for small boxes
Are the various gumtree timbers, spotted gum, red gum etc suitable for use in jewellery boxes.
I have no experience in using these timbers and thought a decent slab would provide enough wood for many small boxes if I resaw it.
Are they easy to resaw and thickness and do they take finishes easily

I would say that generally they are OK but not ideal. With coarse grain and often heavier and more dense than traditional cabinet timbers cutting and machining is harder but most sand and take a finish well.
For mine a nice box has some interesting grain. Perhaps some fiddle back, spalting, burl, birdseye or some other contrasting and interesting feature. After that it is the craftsmanship that makes it a desirable item. This can be achieved with eucalypts.
cheers
