MDF - new... Waterproof/rotproof for 50 years - FYI
I use a LOT of MDF.
People often hate it. Thats cool, but I thought this new product might be interesting for others.
Its new from Gunnersens. Called Tricoya: https://www.gunnersens.com.au/info/tricoya/ and https://tricoya.com/
It cuts, sands, paints and shapes like MDF, but without so much evil dust, with a better edge, smoother finish surface, and the ability to use it OUTDOORS and INGROUND!
Joys!
Attached are some photos of a sample sent by my rep today. It weighs more and smells a little like vinegar for a while, but other than that it looks pretty good.

Soon going to be making some cabinetry for an outdoor kitchen - I was looking at using WetLine: https://cowdroy.com.au/media/Wetline...ine_lowres.pdf
That stuff a few months ago was quoted to me around $250 a sheet - considering, that's not too bad price-wise.
If this material is like MDF, then presumably it'll take a finish in the same manner as MDF, and could be a VERY interesting alternative.
Have we any idea on price?

I suspect the price may be evil, but I've enquired.

Indeed - I did a bit more digging after posting.
No price disclosed anywhere, of course, so I'm very keen to hear what you find out.
For giggles, given that they suggested the Big Green Shed should stock it, I went to their website. I searched The Big Green Shed website for "tricoya". It suggested I was stupid, and I wanted a tripod instead. It promptly offered me 29 of them. This strikes me as typical of the level of failure in the website concerned - in fact, I've yet to find a hardware store website that's worse.
I will source it somewhere else (I have other options relatively local)
That reminds me, I keep meaning to ask - how did you arrive at the forum "rank" of "Oh Demoted One"?

Going on the pictures posted it looks more like a variety of chipboard to me than MDF.
Incidentally, if I'd want to build an outdoor kitchen out of sheet material, I'd go with a high quality ply instead.
I can buy imported birch ply, 18mm, 13ply, for under 150 NZ$ ... resorcinol bonded, so
that is NOT going to come apart. Might still want to seal it for outdoors, naturally.
I'd take that 50 year warranty with a grain of salt, until someone comes along and tells
me that they built their compost bin out of it 10 years ago and it's still as good as new ...

50 year guarantee for something that's only just been developed sounds like exponential bull dust to me. Maybe their working on the principal that a first year apprentice now will either passed away or couldn't give a rats about it failing after 50 years, same applies to a customer.

Some information on the accelerated weather tests from Gunersens would be interesting. Mind you, these tests are somewhat objective and as RW said time will tell. I recall with horror when Gibbs Bright placed a 50 year guarantee on Panel floor, based on the assurances of the glue supplier. The product failed dismally and sent the Company to the wall.

Hmmmmm, only available in SA and NT at the moment but I am certain the big green shed will try to corner the market sometime in the near future.

Tricoya, smells like vinegar? Sounds like they're making it out of this stuff https://www.accoya.com/
It's not a new development, Accoya treated timber has been around for a while and, as well as being practically everything-proof (except fire), it's EXTREMELY stable.
One thing to note is that all fasteners must be stainless, the vinegar treatment will destroy bright or galvanised steel

That site actually lists Tricoya as one of their MDF products.

Ι don't trust any company to even exist that long, never mind honour a warranty from 50 years ago, but the product does look interesting. Thanks for the update
