Melbourne Timber Suppliers
G'Day Folks
I'm going to make a new workbench, this year. I'm hoping this one will outlast me. I'm after a supplier for a suitable amount of one of the following.
Blackbutt (E. Pilularis)
Grey Box (E. Microcarpa, E. Moluccana)
Grey Gum (E. Punctata, E. Propinqua)
Spotted Gum (Corymbia Maculata)
I'd prefer it to be dry and in biggish sizes. I need some 6x6s for the legs and want to make a top 5" or greater in thickness. For the top I need good lengths exceeding 8'.
I'm in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne but am happy to do a day trip for it.
If anyone has some suggestions on a source then I'd be happy to hear them.

I have found Matthews Timber to be quite good. They are in Vermont.

Thankyou, I'll go and have a look. The crowd I usually deal with doesn't keep the big dimensions in the species I'm interested in.

Sounds like a monster bench....that will need a crane to move it !
I would have thought that a 4" x 4" section would be sufficient for the legs (assuming a properly braced design), and I'd be happy with a solid top 3 - 3.5" thick for the majority, with maybe 5" deep x 2" thick aprons front and back.
Of the timbers you have listed, I'd go with Spotted Gum if you can get it in the required sections.

I've drawn up a table of the eight species most suited for bench design grown in australia. All the key data is in it so I can compare them. My current first preference is grey box followed closely by spotted gum which only loses out due to slightly lower density and hardness. So yes Mr Brush, I'd be happy with spotted gum
Top of the league table is Grey Ironbark. I was initially going to use this but then I thought of trying to plane and work the joints in it and decided that was probably going to be too difficult. I've never made any furniture out of it but I did once make a door step, very tough and durable timber.
What do folks think? Have I chickened out unncessarily?
